Matt Sanders - Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for South West Hertfordshire

Matt is a local campaigner and education policy expert, with a track record in helping to change the law to improve children’s lives. He grew up in Suffolk, Essex and the North West, and has family roots in Hertfordshire, where his Mum went to school.

His own experience of education left Matt determined to give back to society. Matt attended his local comprehensive school, and received free school meals. He overcame the odds to win a place to study architecture at Cambridge University - and since then has worked for a fairer start in life for all children.

Working as a government adviser, Matt drove the introduction of Universal School Meals for Infants and the Pupil Premium. These policies have meant extra money to support children in South West Hertfordshire schools, and have helped thousands of local families with the cost of living.

Matt also previously served as Chief Education Adviser to New Zealand’s Minister of Education. Today he works in the technology sector focussing on how new technologies can support educators and people with disabilities, and is a Trustee of a national homelessness charity.

Matt is an active campaigner across South West Hertfordshire, and will be a strong voice for our towns and villages. His local priorities include:

  • Fighting for better health provision including a new hospital at Watford;
  • Protecting our local environment and green belt, from Abbots Langley to Chorleywood, from top down government targets;
  • Securing opportunities for our children and young people, backing Hertfordshire’s reforms for children with special educational needs;
  • Challenging rail companies for more reliable transport services, after uncovering data showing that almost one in four trains from Kings Langley are late or cancelled.

At the last General Election, the Conservatives held South West Hertfordshire with the Liberal Democrats in second place. Only Matt Sanders and the Liberal Democrats can beat the Conservatives here.
